What is BodyThoughts?

WHAT IS BODYTHOUGHTS?

BodyThoughts is an art pop-up experience designed by a photographer, Alexa Mazzarello, and former international model, Erica McDonald, to shift the way women are represented in the world. The BodyThoughts experience is designed to ignite the body image conversation in a new way, and to challenge the way people from all walks of life experience the world through their bodies.

The immersive, multi-medium focus invites guests to reflect on and discuss the ways they think about their bodies in a new, meditative way. Guests begin to question their own responsibility as both content consumers and creators.

WHY WAS BODYTHOUGHTS CREATED?

Co-founder and photographer Alexa Mazzarello, after years behind the camera, decided to start a new, honest conversation with nude, natural photographs of her own body. Erica McDonald, co-founder and former international model, joined BodyThoughts in order to shift the way women are represented, reducing the harm caused to individuals and society

The duo behind BodyThoughts wanted to create a different conversation around body image. They designed the experience using their multidisciplinary backgrounds and personal experiences to create an immersive, multi-medium focus that invites guests to reflect and discuss the way they think about their bodies in a meditative way. Guests begin to question their own responsibility as both content consumers and creators.

WHO IS THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS?

Founder and photographer Alexa Mazzarello, after years behind the camera, decided to start a new, honest conversation with nude, natural photographs of her own body. With a background in sociology and a Masters in Public Health, Alexa was very concerned about how women were being portrayed and what she heard them say about themselves as she photographed them. She needed to take responsibility and speak up. Alexa wanted to take a stand as a woman, artist and photographer to start a new conversation for women and their bodies.

WHY IS THE SHOW CALLED BODYTHOUGHTS?

The name BodyThoughts was meant to invite guests to reflect and discuss the way they think about their bodies in a meditative way. It is personal and contemplative, allowing each guest to find insights in their own thoughts around how they experience the world through their body. There are no right or wrong answers or premeditated take-away’s.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE TAKE-AWAY FROM THE BODYTHOUGHTS EXPERIENCE?

BodyThoughts is meant to be personal and individual; it’s a space to talk about body image. and our role as both content consumers and creators. On the one hand, the goal is to challenge conventional thoughts about the way we think about our bodies. It is also a call to action for content creators to become conscious about the content they put into the world. And, it is a place for individuals to start asking questions about the content they are ‘liking’.

A Vancouver guest, Elana, captured it beautifully, “[BodyThoughts was real, it was raw, and in that space, for that period of time was cultivated a conversation about body truths. Truths that have begged for vindication over eras. This was a platform. Not the same as driving by a Dove billboard and being left with an fleeting afterthought, it was a container - 4 walls, 6 photos, and people to discuss what's real…There was tangible and gallant purity to it all. I’m impressed by the ‘let be’ more than the ‘fight’ spirit of it. It just is. A body, a story, a thought, a new conversation.”
